GEO and AEO explained: how to get ChatGPT to mention your business

Ask ChatGPT for “a good physiotherapist in Wassenaar” and you don’t get ten blue links, you get one answer with two or three names. If you are not among them, you don’t exist for that customer.

What is GEO?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization: setting up your website and online presence so generative AI (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot) knows, understands and mentions your business when it is relevant.

What is AEO?

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization: writing content that directly answers a concrete question. Search engines and assistants quote those answers in featured snippets, Google’s AI Overviews and voice assistants.

Is SEO dead, then?

No. AI assistants get much of their information from the same sources as Google. Good SEO is the foundation; GEO and AEO build on top of it.

Five things your website needs

  1. Clear facts. Who you are, what you do, where, for whom, and roughly what it costs. In plain sentences, in a predictable place.
  2. Direct answers. An FAQ with the questions customers really ask, each answered in the first sentence.
  3. Structured data. Invisible labels (schema.org) that tell machines: this is a business, these are the opening hours, this is a frequently asked question.
  4. Consistent listings. The same name, address and phone number on your site, Google Business Profile, Chamber of Commerce and industry sites.
  5. Speed and accessibility. AI crawlers read fast, clean HTML best. Heavy pages full of scripts often get read only halfway.

How do I know it’s working?

Ask the questions your customers would ask to several assistants and note whether you are mentioned. Do it monthly to see the trend. With a findability plan I do this for you and report in plain language.
